12 THE NORMAL RECORD. cA MIDNIGHT SCE&CE. It was night, and a deep and peaceful silence brooded over and within the little white cottage where those seven Normal girls lived. The blinds were drawn and darkness wrapt the front and tbe learof the house in its midnight shadows. From the east window of the dining room, alone, a faint ray of light shimmered through a chink in the shutters. Within a scene of perfect silence lay. At the hookladeu study table, Nina, the eldest aud jolliest girl sat. Studying? Oh no! It was Friday night, and she was writing a letter home to tell her folks that it was only four days until vacation. The bright rays from he light shone over her and the scattered eaps of books. On Jbe wall, it cast dark, flickering shadows; the face of the clock gleamed brightly in its light. Nina's pen scratched ominously; the clock ticked louder aud louder, as its hands moved on towards twelve. From the inner ruom came the peaceful breathing of two weary sleeping Normal girls. Suddenly from the depths of the dark- uess within, came a soul-rendering shriek! It rang through the silent rooms, aud the solitary Nina with terror stricken face, and one wild look behind, fled with moans of fear up the darkened stairway to her friends. With a wild rush she entered their room, and by i baking them vigorously she roused the i.reaming girls. They rose, and with white faces, open staring eyes, and frowsled heads eagerly questioned Nina. "What is it?" "Is the house on fire?" "What is the matter?" "No! Oh no! Its a man in the house! What shall we do? What shall we do?" across the hall came the pattering of feet, aud within the doorway appeared two more ghostly figures, with more questions. AH Nina could say was "That girl, oh that girl downstairs; she is killed, she surely is!" With quaking hearts, aud trembling clasped hands, they resolved to go downstairs. They armed themselves with whatever was handiest, and with Leta, the youngest and the boldest in the lead, they started. Behind her, brandishing her umbrella in the air, came Genevieve, and last came tbe frightened Nina. With slow still tread, they approached Rose and Edith's room. They pushed the door gently, and as it creaked on its hinges, Genevieve with nervous haste, thrust her umbrella through the opening aud waved it wildly in the room. Oh who would not have fled at the sight of that flourishing weapon? Instead of a cry of fear from within came a smothered giggle. Then as the door swung back, a peal of laughter rang from the depths of the folding-bed. The day, or rather the night, was saved. Rose had been dreaming of some horrible accident and screamed in her selep. L. M. S. 'RESOLUTIONS FO% THE NEW YEA% M. Meriam —Resolves not to patronize the Normal Record. G.
