Photograph shows hydroelectric power plant . On left is railroad track from the construction of the Western Pacific railroad through the Feather River Valley . Note : 'Great Western Power's initial undertaking was the construction of a powerhouse at Big Bend , 65 miles below the reservoir site at Big Meadows . At Big Bend , the Feather River sweeps in a wide 12-mile horseshoe arc , with the two points of the arc close together . It was an ideal site for the driving of a diversion tunnel to connect the two extremes , the Big Bend property and,. . constructed a powerhouse which for some time was the largest hydro project west of the Mississippi ' -- from California Stored with Many Blessings fit For the Use of Man Black , James , 1948 , pg . 48 .
