Photograph shows the Chico display at the Butte County Citrus Fair . Written on photograph , Oroville The County Seat of Butte County is situated on the bank of Rio de los Plumas , or Feather River , where it debouches from the low foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains , 500 miles from Los Angeles , and is in the heart of the great Semi-tropical Fruit Belt of Northern California . With a climate slightly warmer , Summer and Winter , than that of Los Angeles , and free from fog or moist ocean breezes , oranges ripen at Oroville and vicinity from four to six weeks earlier than at any point in Southern California . The accompanying photographs are views of different parts of the Citrus Fair held at Oroville from December 20th to December 27th , 1887 . The exhibit being composed of Citrus Fruit grown in Butte County alone . Since the Fair over 100,000 orange trees have been planted in Butte County .
