Pioneer Days started in 1915 as a springtime celebration promoting the college to visiting high school students. The events evolved in to a week of activities to include a parade, dances, sack races, pie eating, tug-o-war, beard contests, theatrical and variety shows and concert. Campus groups competed with historical displays built in the quad, to promote their Sheriff and Little Nell candidates who competed to head the Pioneer Day Parade. The event ended in 1990 after problems arising from an increase in out of town visitors, intoxication, criminal acts and riots.
